I\u2019m talking about the discipline of crafting words and sentences that help shape the user experience, by guiding a user through a digital product with clear, concise and useful copy. UX writers design the user experience with words.<\/p><p>For a few months now, I\u2019ve been working as a mentor in the <a href=\"https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/join-the-ux-writing-academy\/\"><b>UX Writing Academy program of the UX Writing Hub<\/b><\/a>. They gave me the opportunity to reconnect with my passion for language and translation, by signing me up for the <b>online conference for localization professionals<\/b> <a href=\"https:\/\/locworld.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LocWorldWide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. I had the pleasure of listening to stories, projects and challenges of localization managers of some prominent international companies, such as Microsoft, Atlassian, Shopify, Adobe and many more.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a young discipline, UX writing nowadays is being shaped by people with a plethora of different backgrounds. By the end of the conference however, I was convinced that localization professionals also have at least as much affinity with UX writers as other \u2018more traditional\u2019 professions that more often transition into UX writing, such as journalism, communications, psychology or design.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let me give you four reasons why I believe that localization experts are in a great position to pick up UX writing in no time!<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-0c20192 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"0c20192\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-3a7f594\" data-id=\"3a7f594\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d618e5c elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"d618e5c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">1. On a daily basis, they are dealing with character limits, design restrictions or other aspects of interface writing that force them to <\/span><b>use words to come up with a clever solution<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Or sometimes, they just feel that a certain word or expression is not 100% what they\u2019d like to say, or that it doesn\u2019t address the mindset of the user in that particular part of the user journey. Often, they know a few different languages and try to regularly savour each and every one of them. They devour books in one language, listen to music in another language and will relax at night watching a series in a third language. They\u2019re the type of people that will always learn a handful of words of the local language when vacationing abroad. Words for them are like magic spells that open doors in strange lands.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They have a deep understanding of both their mother tongue and one or more other languages, all of them within their cultural context. It gives them <\/span><b>a broad-ranging set of words, expressions and thinking frameworks to clarify exactly what they want to express<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the conference, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/christianartope\/?originalSubdomain=de\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Christian Artop\u00e9<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the Berlin-based advertising agency GUB.Berlin presented a great example of how creative localization experts can be with words.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Their client, the ridesharing service Berlk\u00f6nig, is well-known all over Berlin for its snarky, typical Berlin sense of humor in their advertising. To reach also non-German speakers in Berlin, they had to find a way to <\/span><b>translate the cheeky sense of humor in their German ads to English<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of their ads shows a Berlk\u00f6nig van parked right in front of a swingers club (not the dance kind of \u2018swinging\u2019, just to be clear here). The German text used to say \u2018<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Berlin teilt man doch gerne<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019, which translates to \u2018In Berlin people just love sharing\u2019.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You get the ambiguity, right? If Berliners aren\u2019t sharing a ride, they might as well be sharing their partner. Another sentence that applies to both the van and the club with a different meaning, but the same naughty, tongue-in-cheek sound.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A perfect example of how a broad knowledge of words, expressions, cultural references and other language-related knowledge allow localization experts to be creative with words. Bearing in mind the UX writing rules of clear, concise, conversational and useful copy, they can do great things as UX writers!<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-9b86c29 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"9b86c29\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-25a11d8\" data-id=\"25a11d8\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-74361ca elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"74361ca\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">2. They are sensitive to context<\/h2>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-2cfda7d elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"2cfda7d\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-feca134\" data-id=\"feca134\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-75843d4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"75843d4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Localization experts know that language never exists on its own. It is always embedded in a <\/span><b>geographical, historical and cultural context<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. There can be differences on so many contextual levels \u2013 even for native speakers of the same language, a translation that doesn\u2019t look at the context can lead to hilarious, confusing or painful situations.<\/span><\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/chris-jaekl-7933071\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chris Jaekl<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Shopify talked about his journey in localizing an e-commerce platform for different markets. He gave a good example of why it\u2019s crucial to take the context of the user into account, if you want to create a good user experience.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When logging in to Shopify, the user is greeted by the interface. Jaekl gave the example of a user with the name \u2018Ken Tanaka\u2019. In English, an appropriate way of greeting this person would sound like \u2018<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hello Ken!<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019. Sounds reasonable, right? For English speakers it definitely does.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When translating such a simple sentence literally to Japanese, the <\/span><b>user would feel offended by how impolite the interface is greeting them<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Japan has a culture with different levels of respect and politeness when addressing another person. This has found its way into the language, which has many different so-called honorifics. So Shopify had to take this cultural reality into account when creating the Japanese version. Even for a simple thing as saying hello to your user.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The greeting on the Japanese version of Shopify would be \u7530\u4e2d\u3055\u3093 (Tanaka-san), which would literally translate to \u2018Tanaka, Sir\u2019. Jaekl even added that a more appropriate way of translating this would be something like \u2018Honored customer Mr. Tanaka, Sir\u2019. Sounds weird, right? Well, in Japan it is business as usual.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This example shows that <\/span><b>context can make a real difference between successful and failed communication<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> when translating content. Rather than translation, localization professionals often talk about transcreation. It refers to transferring a message from one language to another, while maintaining its intent and context and making sure that style and tone resonate with the target audience.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">UX writers are designers with words, and designers also have to be sensitive to context. They ask themselves <\/span><b>many questions before writing a single word<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">: What information does the user already have? This way, the functionality of each piece of content is not taken into account when designing. Ideally, <\/span><b>a product team should start by thinking about how each piece of content will guide the user through the interface<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and help them to reach their goals. This is a great way to avoid or reduce design issues in a later stage of the process.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Localization experts come across similar challenges and have taken on similar battles as UX writers. Due to a number of inherent differences between languages, some interfaces just can\u2019t be populated with another language without glitches or larger issues arising.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Conventions like punctuation, use of symbols or date formats can be confusing for the user. Where in the US \u2018<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">10\/08<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019 means 8 October, the same expression in France means 10 August. For digital products for air or train travel, users might end up buying tickets for the wrong date, if not properly localized.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another example is the pluralization of nouns after numbers. The plural of \u2018table\u2019 in English will be \u2018tables\u2019, regardless of the number that proceeds the word. In Polish however, the plural of \u2018table\u2019 (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">st\u00f3\u0142<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) will take different forms depending on the number. There are 2, 3 and 4 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018sto\u0142y\u2019<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but 5, 6 or higher <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018sto\u0142\u00f3w\u2019<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In an interface where words need to be pluralized according to the input of the user, the developer will be happy to get this information up front.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also, the overall length of words or sentences in a given language can make designs tricky to localize. <\/span><b>Some languages are rather compact, others are naturally long<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as German. Adding German text to an interface that has been designed for English copy will almost certainly be problematic due to space issues.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During a panel conversation, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/andyandersen1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Andy Andersen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Tinder mentioned that his efforts in evangelizing the early involvement of localization in the design process have paid off. To save their German colleagues from unnecessary headaches while translating the interface, their American designers now know that they need to leave extra space for other languages.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes, <\/span><b>the syntax of a language can cause problems, at least when the design imposes a certain word order<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in a sentence. Chris Jaekl of Shopify shared the image below, where a certain interface has been localized from English to Japanese. With the help of localization experts, the developers had to rearrange all the hard-coded elements to make sense for users of the target language. As you can imagine, a painful and probably costly operation!<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Or what about localizing in languages where you don\u2019t read from left to right, such as Hebrew, Arabic, and Farsi. Software internationalization consultant <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/g-alm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gilad Almosnino<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> talked about this specific issue and the challenges it can cause for the UI layout.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He presented <\/span><b>the principle of UI mirroring<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, where designers create the mirror image of an interface for a similar feel and flow for both a LTR (left-to-right) language interface as for the version in the RTL (right-to-left).\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He also talked about the challenge of including LTR words in RTL interfaces. He gave a simple example of the Hebrew IKEA catalog, where the title includes one Swedish word. They seem to be the front runners of including both UX writers and localization experts early on in the design process.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During their talk, they discussed how <\/span><b>they set up weekly or bi-weekly meetings where designers present their newest creations for their localization colleagues<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This way, language-related design issues can be spotted early on and the designers can explore alternative ways to make their designs more localization-friendly.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They also use collaboration tools such as Lokalise and Figma to keep everyone in the loop about design updates.
