Job hunting has become a long and tiring process, and finding the perfect\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/what-is-ux-writing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UX Writing<\/a>\u00a0role is no different.<\/p><p>Most UX positions start with an application, interview or two (or three or four), and a task to showcase their skill. Though these tasks vary a lot by company, they usually consist of a product flow (like someone signing up for the first time, or creating an item) that needs copy improvements. Applicants are given anywhere from a day to a week to work on the task and, if their ideas match expectations, the hiring process moves forward. Note that take-home tasks differ from whiteboard challenges, which are usually done during the interview in real-time.<\/p><h2 style=\"color: #7a7a7a;\">What are hiring managers looking for?<\/h2><p>UX Writing is about copy, but that\u2019s only one aspect of the job. Antoaneta Tsaneva, UX Director of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.quantive.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Quantive<\/a>, knows that hiring UX Writers isn\u2019t just about finding good copy.<\/p><p>\u201cWe\u2019re not looking for specific solutions or a right answer,\u201d she says. \u201cTasks will always be a bit out of context. We\u2019re looking for how they\u2019ll work around that. What questions do they ask, and how much initiative do they take?\u201d<\/p><p>As with any writing task, it\u2019s rare that all relevant information is immediate and obvious. \u201cUX Writing is about knowing the meaning beneath people\u2019s words,\u201d Antoaneta adds. \u201cA task lets us see your work process, and how you\u2019d go about finding what you need to improve the experience.\u201d<\/p><p>UX Writer-hopefuls shouldn\u2019t just be looking at the words. Hiring managers use these tasks to better understand how well applicants can manage different UI components, whether they know basic research methodology, and if they know the processes of product development.<\/p><p>Jenni Nadler, the Head of UX Writing at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wix.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wix<\/a>, has specific boxes she\u2019s hoping applicants will tick. \u201cThe first thing we look for is English level. We hire plenty of people who aren\u2019t native speakers, but they have to be near native level,\u201d she says. \u201cWe\u2019re also looking to see whether you can stand behind your work. That\u2019s not always easy to do in an interview, and it doesn\u2019t have to be perfect. But it\u2019s a great opportunity for me to see whether they\u2019ve been thoughtful about their decisions.\u201d<\/p><p>Wix\u2019s UX Writing applicants have 72 hours to complete their task. They\u2019re specifically requested to include any relevant comments, explanations, and questions within their submission. \u201cIt\u2019s great if I see that they\u2019re thinking about conversations they\u2019d need to have with a designer,\u201d Jenni says.<\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">TL;DR:<\/span>\u00a0The best things you can do to ace your task? Do your homework. Understand the company you\u2019re applying to, and the specific directions in the task. Give context where necessary, and be able to back your decisions. Remember: hiring managers are looking at your copy, yes, but they\u2019re also looking at\u00a0<i>how<\/i>\u00a0you get to the point to write it.<\/p><p><img class=\"wp-image-33964 size-full aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/red-warning-flag.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"615\" height=\"407\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/red-warning-flag.jpg 615w, https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/red-warning-flag-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/red-warning-flag-400x265.jpg 400w, https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/red-warning-flag-150x99.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 615px) 100vw, 615px\" \/><\/p><h2 style=\"color: #7a7a7a;\">UX take-home assignment red flags<\/h2><p>Just as there are things that can make you stand out for the better, some choices can put you out of the running.<\/p><p>Elena Tsutsumanova, a Talent Acquisition Specialist at Quantive, views hiring from a company-wide perspective. \u201cYou can imagine my disappointment when I\u2019m going into the meeting super optimistic about an application and the other person has no clue what we do at Quantive,\u201d she says. If an applicant has created a demo account, or gone over the basics of the organization, that can be proof that they are excited about the position. Spend time finding out whether the company has a public style guide, or just take a look at some of their flows, to learn about their current standards.<\/p><p>And let\u2019s repeat our main point here: UX Writing isn\u2019t just about writing words that are grammatically correct. \u201cWe don\u2019t need a translator or proofreader,\u201d Antoaneta pointed out. UX Writers need to be able to work alongside designers and product managers to create clear flows, thoughtful information architecture, and processes for consistent vocabulary and voice.<\/p><p>UX Writing is a detail-oriented job. \u201cThe biggest red flag,\u201d Jenni says, \u201cis if they didn\u2019t change much. The second is if they changed a ton.\u201d While UX Writers often influence the layout of pages within a flow, applicants need to show a willingness to be flexible. UX is about working alongside others to make an experience that works from all angles: writing, design, development, etc.<\/p><p>\u201cAnother red flag is a candidate refusing to complete the UX project that is part of our hiring process,\u201d Elena points out.<\/p><p>It\u2019s a valid point. Many applicants have started wondering whether these sorts of tasks are ethical, or are used as a type of free labor. If a company asks you to write copy for a flow that is currently in production, or that requires days and days of work, those can be red flags to\u00a0<i>you<\/i>. However, most companies use \u201cfake\u201d or outdated flows, meaning that your work won\u2019t be used even if you\u2019re not hired. And recent years have seen assignments significantly shortened in respect for everyone\u2019s time.<\/p><p>For UX Writers who wonder whether a task is necessary at all, well, it depends on your experience. \u201cThey\u2019re critical,\u201d Jenni says, \u201cfor people who are really new. It\u2019s also great practice and experience for someone just starting out, who maybe doesn\u2019t have a portfolio yet.\u201d<\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">TL;DR:\u00a0<\/span>The biggest red flags are not knowing anything about the company or product you\u2019re interviewing for, and not showing knowledge beyond good copy. Show that you know how to work within a UX team.<\/p><h2 style=\"color: #7a7a7a;\">What about other aspects of the hiring process?<\/h2><p>Take-home assignments weigh heavily in the decision making process, but let\u2019s not forget that they don\u2019t stand alone. Getting a UX Writing position also entails submitting an application and sitting through interviews.<\/p><p>While interviews are a great way to test your knowledge, they\u2019re primarily used to see if applicants would be a good fit. \u201cAt Quantive,\u201d Elena says, \u201cwe start off with a 15-minute video interview. This call tells us more than you might think: if the candidate is a good personality fit, how they communicate, how excited they\u2019re about this role, and how passionate they are about UX in general.\u201d<\/p><p>A recent survey showed that 82% of tasks are given\u00a0<i>after<\/i>\u00a0at least one interview. The challenge matters\u2013a lot\u2013but\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/ux-writing-interview\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">use the interviews<\/a>\u00a0to show your personality and excitement for the job.<\/p><p>And it\u2019s often your portfolio that gets you that first interview. There are a lot of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/best-ux-writing-portfolio-builders\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">great tools<\/a>\u00a0out there to make your work stand out. If you\u2019re looking for your first-ever role, you can make case studies of already-existing products to show how you&#8217;d improve their flows.<\/p><h2 style=\"color: #7a7a7a;\">A Case Study<\/h2><p>Let\u2019s step away from the theoretical and get into the practical. Take a look at the challenge that got me my position as the first UX Writer at Quantive.<\/p><p>Quantive provided five screens from their onboarding flow and laid out specific requirements: explain what does and doesn\u2019t work with the current copy, and propose improvements. They noted that the main goal of the flow was to explain to users the value of key product features.<\/p><p>One of the screens was an empty state for Key Performance Indicators (KPIs):<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a0ff53e elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"a0ff53e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img width=\"800\" height=\"488\" src=\"https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/image1-1024x625.jpg\" class=\"attachment-large size-large wp-image-33934\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/image1-1024x625.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/image1-300x183.jpg 300w, https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/image1-768x469.jpg 768w, https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/image1-400x244.jpg 400w, https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/image1-150x92.jpg 150w, https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/image1.jpg 1406w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-62fbed19 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"62fbed19\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s a lot going on here, and the first thing I did was to write down what came to mind:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s a lot of copy on this page, and my eye isn\u2019t drawn to one specific area.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The explanation of why KPIs are helpful uses a lot of buzzwords without clearly stating the advantages.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The demo video in the bottom-right corner is not very visible, and disappears after I leave the page.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Title case is not as accessible as sentence case.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I wrote these notes on the side of the screen, then provided recommended solutions:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remove the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leverage KPIs with OKRs<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> section<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Change the primary title and subtitle to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Create your first KPI: Key Performance Indicators help identify trends and measure the overall health of your company\u2019s progress.<\/span><\/i><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Add a secondary CTA: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">View demo<\/span><\/i><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now that I know the company even better, I wouldn\u2019t make exactly the same recommendations. And that\u2019s okay; in fact, that\u2019s kind of the point. What helped me stand out was, first, that I was able to simplify content into what users needed to read; and, second, that I tackled the problem from a perspective larger than just proofreading the copy. The actual changes to this screen come from discussions and collaboration with other stakeholders.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I followed the same formula with the other four screens, and also included a page of further research I\u2019d conduct and larger recommendations to consider had this been a real project. In the following interview, we didn\u2019t spend time going over every phrase: but we did talk about the general process that brought me to my conclusions.<\/span><\/p><h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A word of encouragement<\/span><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re trying to start out as a UX Writer, the process can seem daunting.
