The loss of income and the fear of what comes next can be overwhelming and stressful.<\/p><p>But it\u2019s not all doom and gloom.<\/p><p>In this article, we\u2019ll look at how the wave of layoffs across tech companies like Twitter, Meta, and Amazon has affected\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/what-is-ux-writing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UX writers<\/a>\u00a0and what you can do to stay on track with your career.<\/p><h1 style=\"color: #7a7a7a;\">Why are tech workers getting hit so hard?<\/h1><p>Right now, we know that more than 35,000 tech workers across 72 companies have been laid off in November, adding to a total of over 128,000 tech jobs lost worldwide in 2022.<\/p><p>It\u2019s difficult to blame the wave of large-scale layoffs on any one factor. But many of the companies making public statements have cited at least one of the following primary causes:<\/p><ul style=\"font-size: 20px; background-color: #ffffff;\"><li style=\"font-size: 20px;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">A pandemic-induced recruiting boom<\/span>: when life migrated online and lockdowns drove up demand for tech products and online services, companies hired a huge number of employees, which have become too expensive to retain, now that offline life has picked up again<\/li><li style=\"font-size: 20px;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Mounting interest rates<\/span>: tech companies, especially startups, are under huge pressure with banks raising rates and reversing pandemic-era monetary easing to ward off soaring inflation.\u00a0<\/li><li style=\"font-size: 20px;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Loss in ad revenue<\/span>: Apple\u2019s privacy policy changes, which now allow users to opt out of targeted ads, have made a massive dent in the once enormous source of revenue for many companies. Snap, Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube have reported a loss of about $10bn in the third and fourth quarters of the year.<\/li><li style=\"font-size: 20px;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">A kerfuffle of economic and political issues<\/span>: the ongoing war in Ukraine, high fuel costs, supply chain issues, and a decline in personal PC sales have made companies look to job cuts as a way of reducing operating costs.<\/li><\/ul><div><h1 style=\"color: #7a7a7a;\"><span style=\"color: inherit; font-size: 2.5rem;\">How have the layoffs impacted UX writers?<\/span><\/h1><p>It\u2019s hard to find a breakdown of layoffs by department since most news outlets have focused on their general impact on the tech industry.<\/p><p>While\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/layoffs.fyi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">layoffs.fyi<\/a>\u00a0gives a more worker-level insight, it\u2019s important to note that the layoff lists there are opt-in, so they aren\u2019t reflective of the real numbers. The difference between the layoff count reported in the press and the layoffs.fyi lists can be huge.<\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.interviewing.io\/how-much-have-2022-layoffs-affected-engineers-vs-other-departments-we-dug-into-the-data-to-find-out\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Interviewing.io<\/a>\u00a0did a great job last month of analyzing the data on layoffs with a breakdown by department. According to their findings,<span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">\u00a0product &amp; design departments across tech companies in the US, which would include UX writers, lost 12% of their staff in 2022.<\/span><\/p><\/div><p>Sources like layoffs.fyi,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/weworkedatshop.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">We Worked at Shop<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/infogram.com\/crunchbase-layoffs-tracker-1h8n6m3ogl3xz4x\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Crunchbase<\/a>, show that layoffs have affected nearly all types of UX roles, including:<\/p><ul style=\"font-size: 20px; background-color: #ffffff;\"><li style=\"font-size: 20px;\" aria-level=\"1\">UX\/UI designers<\/li><li style=\"font-size: 20px;\" aria-level=\"1\">Product designers\u00a0<\/li><li style=\"font-size: 20px;\" aria-level=\"1\">Product managers<\/li><li style=\"font-size: 20px;\" aria-level=\"1\">UX\/UI writers<\/li><li style=\"font-size: 20px;\" aria-level=\"1\">Content designers<\/li><li style=\"font-size: 20px;\" aria-level=\"1\">Content strategists<\/li><li style=\"font-size: 20px;\" aria-level=\"1\">Content developers<\/li><li style=\"font-size: 20px;\" aria-level=\"1\">UX researchers<\/li><\/ul><p>However, product &amp; design wasn\u2019t affected nearly as bad as other departments. According to interviewing.io, the hardest hit were:<\/p><ul style=\"font-size: 20px; background-color: #ffffff;\"><li style=\"font-size: 20px;\" aria-level=\"1\">Recruiting, which lost 50% of its staff<\/li><li style=\"font-size: 20px;\" aria-level=\"1\">HR (48%)<\/li><li style=\"font-size: 20px;\" aria-level=\"1\">Finance (30%)<\/li><\/ul><p>Even though they\u2019re opt-in, a quick trawl through the lists on layoffs.fyi shows that roles in the above departments are in the majority.<\/p><p>It\u2019s also important to note that it wasn\u2019t just junior staff who have been affected. Many who are now jobless had years of experience, some even over a decade.<\/p><p>The turbulent post-pandemic economy has made a lot of companies shift from a growth model to a more conservative \u201cmaintain and survive\u201d approach.\u00a0<\/p><p>This means that while they tighten their belts to adjust to a reduced customer base by slowing down growth and changing their offerings, they will most likely also impose a hiring freeze, leading newly laid-off workers, especially those at junior level and those requiring a work visa or permit, to face more competition on the job market.<\/p><p>It\u2019s hard to predict just how the UX landscape will shift. Since many businesses will steer away from expansion or product development because of sky-high interest rates, we might see fewer UX personnel assigned to new work.<\/p><p>But this doesn\u2019t mean job opportunities will disappear.\u00a0<\/p><p>Those laid off can still avail of many opportunities at mid-size and small companies in tech and non-tech areas, such as health care, retail, government, and financial services.<\/p><h1 style=\"color: #7a7a7a;\">The cost of bad UX writing<\/h1><p>UX writing is still a flexible, in-demand skill that\u2019s valuable in just about any industry. Bad UX can very easily tarnish a brand\u2019s reputation.<\/p><ul style=\"font-size: 20px; background-color: #ffffff;\"><li style=\"font-size: 20px;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pwc.com\/us\/en\/zz-test\/assets\/pwc-consumer-intelligence-series-customer-experience.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">PwC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">\u00a0found that 32% of customers say they would leave even a favorite brand after just one bad experience.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p>Fortunately, you as a UX writer have the power to turn a product into a real crowd-pleaser.<\/p><ul style=\"font-size: 20px; background-color: #ffffff;\"><li style=\"font-size: 20px;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thinkwithgoogle.com\/marketing-strategies\/app-and-mobile\/negative-mobile-experience-statistics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Google<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">\u00a0found that users are 62% less likely to purchase from a brand because of negative user experience.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p>People only do business with brands they are comfortable with. That\u2019s why the experience you create with your writing matters.<\/p><h1 style=\"color: #7a7a7a;\">So what now?<\/h1><p>First off, keep in mind that you matter and your work matters. UX experts are the leaders of the digital transformation age and are still changing the digital landscape as we know it.\u00a0<\/p><p>An important takeaway from all the noise on layoffs is\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">not to take it personally<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">not to let the news bog you down<\/span>.<\/p><p>Over the last few months, media coverage has made the tech industry look like an unstable, volatile landscape. But the reality is that cycles of boom and bust are very frequent in the tech industry and we\u2019ve been through them before. In fact, some of the biggest tech companies today, like Amazon, eBay, and Booking.com, have grown from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ideas.ted.com\/an-eye-opening-look-at-the-dot-com-bubble-of-2000-and-how-it-shapes-our-lives-today\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dot-com bubble burst in the early 00s<\/a>.<\/p><p>The Marketplace Tech podcast did\u00a0<a
