Many people had been involved in creating copy, meaning it lacked consistency and a unified voice. They knew that their UX copy and flows would benefit from the attention of a trained UX writer.\u00a0<\/p><p>So they decided to join the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/marsh-dianella-444.notion.site\/Work-with-UX-Writing-Academy-students-for-FREE-605ffb53fdbf45138e10b39989c146e0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UX Writing Accelerator,<\/a>\u00a0a program where\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/join-the-ux-writing-academy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UX Writing Academy<\/a>\u00a0students\u00a0work on a real project with a real company, led by an experienced mentor.\u00a0Before the project, the students had spent six months learning the UX ropes through a mix of group and individual assignments. The real project at Sessions was a chance for them to put all their skills into practice and\u00a0experience what it&#8217;s like to work as a UX writer.\u00a0Students gain valuable experience, while companies get assistance improving their product copy. It\u2019s a win-win for everyone involved!<\/p><p>The students who joined the project were Carla (who was hired as the company&#8217;s first UX writer after the project), Charles, Lenore, and Shanyn. They did a stellar job and worked as a team despite being spread out across the world, from the US to Finland. It was built to enable people to organize and hold online meetings in one and the same place, without having to access documents and tools outside the meeting platform.\u00a0<\/p><p>Sessions integrates all features needed for an online meeting, including video conferencing apps, instant messaging apps, calendar apps, cloud documents and drives, and virtual whiteboards. This means you can<span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">\u00a0access everything on the go<\/span>\u00a0without having to jump between different applications.<\/p><p>Check out this\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=03LwzNELgAM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">short video about Sessions on Product Hunt<\/a>.<\/p><p><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight );\">For this project, UXWA students focused on the so-called Designer feature of Sessions, which allows you to plan your meetings in advance around a clear agenda and organize all the content you need for the meeting. Specifically, their task was to<\/span><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-weight: bold;\">\u00a0improve the onboarding flow<\/span><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight );\">, orienting users to the software when they use it for the first time.<\/span><\/p><p>Sessions communicated their challenges to students to help them gauge where there was most room for improvement:<\/p><ul style=\"font-size: 20px; background-color: #ffffff;\"><li style=\"font-size: 20px;\" aria-level=\"1\">First, they were concerned that their onboarding flow is too complex, especially the second half of the flow where users set up their first session.\u00a0<\/li><li style=\"font-size: 20px;\" aria-level=\"1\">Second, Sessions was curious to see how the onboarding flow for the Designer feature could be merged with the main flow of the product to help users better understand how to optimize their workflow.\u00a0<\/li><li style=\"font-size: 20px;\" aria-level=\"1\">Third, some of the existing copy in the app was written by non-native English speakers, and Sessions wanted to ensure that the copy was consistent, clear, and positively reflected their brand image.<\/li><\/ul><h2 style=\"color: #7a7a7a;\">The Process<\/h2><p>Over a period of six weeks, UXWA students worked diligently to understand Sessions\u2019 business goals, evaluate their current product copy,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/ux-research-for-beginners\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">perform user research<\/a>\u00a0and ultimately produce recommendations for improvements.<\/p><p>Students began by learning about the product and using Sessions for themselves to get a first-hand understanding of the product. They reviewed Sessions\u2019 own user research, including their personas and statistics from their onboarding funnel. font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight );\" href=\"https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/leveraging-conversation-mining-for-ux-writing-research\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">conversation mining<\/a><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text );\">, a UX writing research technique pioneered by the UX Writing Hub.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text );\">By seeking out publicly available conversations related to Sessions and similar products, for example on social media and reviews, the UX writing team can glean<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text );\">how people talk about the product and its features<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold; color: var( --e-global-color-text );\">.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text );\">It\u2019s a great way to gather insights about\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold; color: var( --e-global-color-text );\">words and phrases that are likely to resonate with users<\/span><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text );\">\u00a0and also to understand\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight );\" href=\"https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/ux-content-testing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">usability testing<\/a><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text );\">\u00a0with the help of the Sessions research team. They wrote a testing scenario and tasks based on their prior research, and asked the research team to test how the copy resonated with users.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p>Another task was to review Sessions\u2019 existing\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/content-design-systems\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">content style guide<\/a>. After gaining an understanding of how Sessions hopes to communicate with their users, the students reviewed the voice and tone of the product and came up with improvements to the style guide based on the insights from their research. Then they shifted their focus to crafting copy suggestions. Working closely with Head of Design at Sessions Robert Gavrilescu, the students implemented their copy suggestions in Figma. Afterwards, Gavrilescu expressed, \u201cI\u2019m super grateful to have met everyone here.
