But we didn\u2019t just ask about money.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this article, we\u2019ll examine stats about writers and designers in the workplace. We\u2019ll look at the ratio of writers to designers, how involved writers are in decision-making, how these play out in different countries and sectors, and more.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first area we\u2019ll look at is the ratio of writers to designers in the workplace.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The writer-to-designer ratio<\/span><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Historically, we\u2019ve known that writers were heavily outnumbered by designers in tech companies. But as awareness has risen over the past few years, did this translate to a higher ratio of writers\/designers on product teams?\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are the stats with the percentage of respondents on the y-axis and the ratio on the x-axis:<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-699ad65 elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"699ad65\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img width=\"800\" height=\"494\" src=\"https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/image3-1024x632.png\" class=\"attachment-large size-large wp-image-29134\" alt=\"ux writer-to-designer ratio chart\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/image3-1024x632.png 1024w, https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/image3-300x185.png 300w, https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/image3-768x474.png 768w, https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/image3-400x247.png 400w, https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/image3-150x93.png 150w, https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/image3.png 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5d62241 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"5d62241\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though we don\u2019t have exact numbers from the previous years, we see that writers aren\u2019t as outnumbered as they once were.<\/span><\/p><p><b>Quick stats (with rough percentages)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">10% of writers work on teams with a 1:1 ratio and another 10% with a 1:2 ratio.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More than 60% of writers work in a ratio between 1:1 and 1:5.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Close to 90% work in a ratio of 1:10 or below.\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Only 5% of writers work on a team with a very high imbalance of more than 1:20 writers\/designers.\u00a0<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The trend seems to be positive for a healthy writer-to-designer ratio, and we can assume more companies now realize the value of having writers (plural!) on their teams.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So how do these ratios influence or correlate with other factors?<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Writers involved in design decisions<\/span><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s an interesting one. We asked respondents <strong>how involved they are in product design decision-making<\/strong> on a scale of 1\u20135 (not at all \u2013 very much so).\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This number tracks the writer-to-designer ratio fairly closely, especially as the ratio increases. So once we get past the 1:8 ratio, there\u2019s a close correlation between how involved writers are in making design decisions and the writer\/designer ratio. Fewer writers per designer means less involved writers. We\u2019ve heard from many in the past who have been the sole writer across multiple products in a company. Hopefully, these \u201cwriting as an afterthought\u201d days are in the past for most companies now.<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Writer\/designer and salaries<\/span><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OK, now for the big one: <strong>does the writer\/designer ratio affect or correlate with salary<\/strong>? \ud83e\udd41<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The answer is an unsatisfactory \u201csort of.\u201d Have a look: salary on the y-axis, ratio on the x-axis.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-abe9f32 elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"abe9f32\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img width=\"800\" height=\"494\" src=\"https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/image5-1024x632.png\" class=\"attachment-large size-large wp-image-29136\" alt=\"ux writers vs designers salaries chart\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/image5-1024x632.png 1024w, https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/image5-300x185.png 300w, https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/image5-768x474.png 768w, https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/image5-400x247.png 400w, https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/image5-150x93.png 150w, https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/image5.png 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-eb23d58 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"eb23d58\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The data shows that there isn\u2019t a large correlation between the two. But, in general, the fewer writers to designers, the more they tend to earn until you pass the 1:40 threshold. After that, there\u2019s a sharp decline.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s a bit hard to say what\u2019s behind this phenomenon. <\/span><b>Writers working at a 1:7 through 1:40 ratio are paid higher salaries on average<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Perhaps this is due to the scarcity principle increasing their value in the company.<\/span><\/p><h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Writer\/designer ratio by country<\/span><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And what about ratios across countries? <strong>Are some countries ahead of others when it comes to a healthy writer\/designer balance<\/strong>? Let\u2019s have a look.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This next chart compares four countries: the USA, Israel, Brazil, and Germany (percentage of respondents on the y-axis, ratio on the x-axis).\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The overall trends for each country are similar, but we see that Israel leads with smaller ratios, while Brazil and Germany have more writers in the higher percentages.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b20854a elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"b20854a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img width=\"800\" height=\"494\" src=\"https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/image1-1024x632.png\" class=\"attachment-large size-large wp-image-29137\" alt=\"ux Writer\/designer ratio by country chart\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/image1-1024x632.png 1024w, https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/image1-300x185.png 300w, https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/image1-768x474.png 768w, https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/image1-400x247.png 400w, https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/image1-150x93.png 150w, https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/image1.png 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9334034 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"9334034\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If we examine the rage of 1:1\u20131:3, we see working in this range are:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">50% of Israeli writers<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">33% of American<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">27% of German<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and only 21% of Brazilian<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Or, looking at the other end of the scale, in the range of more than 1:10, we see:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">13% of Brazilians<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">12% of Germans<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">12% of Americans<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2% of Israelis<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So while trends are still improving for a healthy writer\/designer ratio, some countries are farther ahead than others.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One last note about ratios: it\u2019s no surprise that the smaller the company, the higher the chance for a low ratio. For example, more than 60% of writers at small tech companies work within a writer\/designer ratio of 1:1\u20131:3, while that number is less than 30% at large companies.<\/span><\/p><h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are writers paid equal to designers?<\/span><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another question we asked our 1200+ survey participants was <strong>if they earned more or equal to the designers in their companies<\/strong>. Close to 65% of respondents answered that they didn\u2019t know. Almost 25% said that designers make more, while only 12% said writers make the same or more.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This was consistent across most countries, with one major exception. In the UK, 28% said designers make more, and 27% said writers make the same or more.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Company size didn\u2019t affect this number, except at small companies where writers were a bit more likely to be paid equal to designers.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The figures were mostly the same across sectors as well. Encouraging news, but let\u2019s do some cross-tabulation, just for the ol\u2019 heck of it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The global average score for this question is 3.8. But how do country, sector, and company size influence the score?\u00a0<\/span><\/p><h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UX writing growth by country<\/span><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s the list of scores for countries with at least 10 respondents. Latin America shows strong growth with Colombia leading the way. Though, there are several exceptions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the most striking finds is that while B2B\/SaaS is near the top at 4.4, traditional software is at the bottom at 2.8. More companies realize the importance of having writers both on the team and involved in making decisions. But we still have a ways to go. So if you\u2019ll indulge me, I\u2019ll make my case.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Excuse the gross oversimplification, but human cognition tends to come in two forms: visual and verbal. We think in pictures and in words. All of us do both, and most favor one over the other. So if we want to create products and experiences that are easily processed by all people, we need to have both visual and verbal thinkers involved in creating them. Designer <i>and<\/i> writers.<\/span><\/p><p><b>I\u2019ve said it before and I\u2019ll say it again: writing, more than anything else, is <i>thinking<\/i>. And the world needs writers\u2014the verbal thinkers.<\/b><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Writers and designers aren\u2019t milk, cereal, or OJ. They\u2019re not friends or enemies. They\u2019re different sides of the same coin, and we need to have both sides for that coin to have true value.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s all for now.
