If so, the mere thought of daily group meetings, lively brainstorms, direct feedback, user testing sessions, and presenting your work to stakeholders may make you feel exhausted. A poll during the talk revealed that 60% of the audience identified as introverts, 32% as ambiverts and 3% were not sure. Only 5% confirmed that they see themselves as extroverts.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Based on the poll and the (very!) lively activity in the chat, the event confirmed our assumptions. Yes, <\/span><b>many writers are introverted <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and yes, introverted writers working in UX find <\/span><b>some aspects of product design daunting<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are ways to navigate these challenges, though. We\u2019ll show you how in this article \ud83d\ude42\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Professional writing has been <\/span><b>a great match for introverts<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, for several reasons. One article on the topic states that it may have something to do with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/introvertdear.com\/news\/why-introverts-are-drawn-to-writing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the way our brains are wired<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Another reason is the <\/span><b>minimal social interaction<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Not that we\u2019re always completely isolated, but writing lets us earn a living together with just our best friend, the laptop.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s not the case with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/what-is-ux-writing\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UX writing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p><h2><strong>What\u2019s so special about UX writing and content design?<\/strong><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What\u2019s the main difference between UX writing and other types of professional writing? <\/span><b>Design thinking!<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> In other words, if you come from a traditional writing background you need to learn <\/span><b>design processes, methods, and tools<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What does that mean in practice? For sure there\u2019s a lot more to it than learning how to use Figma (although it\u2019s great to learn Figma). We have to get used to a completely new way of working, because product design is:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Collaborative:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> You\u2019ll take part in lively daily standups, sprint planning meetings, ideation brainstorms, open feedback sessions, and retrospectives.\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Iterative: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Everything is a work in process. Instead of spending, say, a month fine-tuning your copy, it will be up for regular review. Whatever you have come up with in a week or a day may be discussed by everyone in the team, including non-writers. (This is a good thing, especially if your target groups include non-writers, which in most cases they will).<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Research-based:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> As a UX writer, you shouldn\u2019t base your copy decisions solely on your own experience and best practices. Your work should be backed up by research, whether you conduct that research yourself or work with a research team. And <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/ux-research-for-beginners\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UX research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a bit different from most academic research, because it\u2019s based on interacting with people more than with books and articles.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For extroverted writers, UX writing must be a dream come true. A writing gig where you spend more time communicating with people than you do writing copy. Like, wow!\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But depending on how introverted you are, these parts of the job can be tough. Why is that, exactly? Let\u2019s take a step back and consider what introversion and extroversion mean.<\/span><\/p><h2><strong>What do introversion and extroversion mean?<\/strong><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before we dive in, remember that nobody is 100% introverted or extroverted. The lucky few who fall bang in the middle are known as <\/span><b>ambiverts<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As many as <\/span><b>up to half the population <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">may be classified as introverts (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/introvertdear.com\/what-is-an-introvert-definition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according to some studies, results vary<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). But in many parts of the world, <\/span><b>extroversion is the norm<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. As a result, introverts often end up pretending to be more extroverted than we are, because we feel the social pressure. So it can be hard to tell who\u2019s an introvert and who\u2019s an extrovert.<\/span><\/p><h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Introversion and shyness are two different things<\/span><\/h3><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s a common misconception that introverts are shy and socially awkward. Today, there\u2019s a broad consensus that shyness and introversion are two different things. Of course it\u2019s possible to be both shy and introverted, but it\u2019s useful to be aware of the difference between them. Shyness is a character trait you have a chance of changing, should you want you. Introversion and extroversion on the other hand are usually considered <\/span><b>permanent aspects of our identity<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and not things we can easily change.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img class=\"alignnone size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.substack.com\/image\/fetch\/h_600,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep\/https%3A%2F%2Fbucketeer-e05bbc84-baa3-437e-9518-adb32be77984.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F1193e348-797d-4734-b615-b630384e830d_620x391.jpeg\" alt=\"Carl Jung relaxing in a chair in black and white\" width=\"620\" height=\"391\" \/><\/span><\/p><h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Where we get our energy from<\/span><\/h3><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you start looking into what introversion and extroversion really mean, you\u2019ll bump into the psychiatrist <\/span><b>Carl Gustav Jung<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> sooner if not later. He didn\u2019t come up with the terms, but he made some interesting observations on the topic in his research. He concluded:<\/span><\/p><p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEach person seems to be energized more by either the external world (extroversion) or the internal world (introversion).\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The keyword is <\/span><b>energized<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. What really separates introverts from extroverts is where we get our energy from and how we recharge. If being around people energizes you, you\u2019re extroverted. If it drains you, you\u2019re introverted.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Extroverts \u27a1 need stimulation. Introverts \u27a1 overstimulation is exhausting.<\/span><\/p><h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How we process information<\/span><\/h3><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research has also revealed other differences between intros and extros. According to the book <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Introvert Advantage<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Dr. Marti Olsen Laney, introverts and extroverts process information differently:\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Introverts tend to favor long-term memory over working memory, while extroverts do the opposite.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In practice, this means that <\/span><b>extroverts need less thinking time<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> before they come up with an answer. They simply extract what they have to hand in their working memory. Introverts have a natural tendency to scan through, analyze and organize everything they have stored in their long-term memory.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This explains why <\/span><b>extroverts often come across as witty and verbally quick<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, even when they\u2019re put on the spot. Extroverts get annoyed by \u201cpassive\u201d introverts, and introverts get overwhelmed by \u201cloud and chatty\u201d extroverts.<\/span><\/p><h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Difference 2: Way of communicating<\/span><\/h3><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Extroverts and introverts<\/span><\/p><ul><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Approach <\/span><b>discussions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> differently\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have different ideas about <\/span><b>silence<\/b><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Respond to <\/span><b>being interrupted<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in different ways<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><b>Possible misunderstanding: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For introverts, silence is a great way to gather their thoughts. This can be downright unnerving for extroverts, who may think there\u2019s something wrong. Also, extroverts often see interruption as a perfectly normal way to keep up the conversation, while introverts may find it rude and unsettling.<\/span><\/p><h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Difference 3: Way of acting<\/span><\/h3><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Extroverts love to take action and move things forward<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Introverts like to consider all options and make a plan before they act<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><b>Possible misunderstanding<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Though this can also be a source of frustration, it can also be advantageous, with the two sides balancing one another. The introverts keep things from moving too fast and getting out of control, while the extroverts keep things from getting stagnant.<\/span><\/p><h2><strong>How to cope as an introverted UX writer<\/strong><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s in our nature as introverts to get exhausted when we\u2019re around people, and this affects how we communicate on a deeper level. How can we cope in a lively product design team?<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Luckily there are plenty of things we can do to <\/span><b>navigate these challenges<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. We\u2019ve collected some smart tips from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=TDLAfAz4hFs&amp;t=1013s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">our recent talk<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and added a few from the lively chat.<\/span><\/p><p><b>Relationship building<\/b><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Go for 1-1 connections and get personal. Many introverts find it less draining to be around people we know\u2014so get to know the people you work with!\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use a variety of communication channels, not just face-to-face meetings. Email, Slack\u2026 whatever works for you \ud83d\ude42<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Explain to people that you are introverted. For sure this doesn\u2019t come naturally to introverts, but you could consider telling your line manager in a 1-1, for example.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use your strengths. Introverts are often good listeners, and listening goes hand in hand with empathy, which is great both for relationship building and for UX in general.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><b>Self-promotion\u00a0<\/b><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Start small with low-pressure interactions. Expand your comfort zone gradually rather than throwing yourself in at the deep end.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Share stuff you\u2019re truly passionate about\u2014passion is stronger than anxiety and makes it worth the effort.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Focus on the subject matter rather than on you as a person.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t push yourself too hard. If you\u2019re not ready to promote yourself in meetings and events, stick to writing for a while! There are usually plenty of options to promote yourself through blog writing etc.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meetings and presentations<\/span><\/h3><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prepare as much as you possibly can.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Create or ask for the meeting agenda in advance.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before a presentation, be sure to practise by verbalizing what you\u2019re going to say out loud\u2014it really does help!<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If ideas come to you after the meeting, that\u2019s cool\u2014share them by email, on Slack, or through whatever communication channels you use at work.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Manage your expectations before meetings and other events. For example, set yourself a goal of contributing once per meeting.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s almost always OK to say, \u201cyou\u2019ve put me on the spot there,\u201d \u201cI might have to think about that,\u201d \u201cI\u2019m not sure off the top of my head but let me get back to you.\u201d<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you\u2019re put on the spot, try winning time by repeating the question back to the person who asked, or by asking them to clarify the question. Sometimes, a few extra seconds is enough to free up some space.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s OK to say that you don\u2019t like being interrupted.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Team up with someone to hold a presentation.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep telling yourself that presentations are fun. (Difficult, we know! But it really does help.) And if you tell yourself that you\u2019re a rubbish presenter, you\u2019re not giving yourself a chance.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remember that public speaking is an acquired skill that anyone can learn.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><img class=\"alignnone wp-image-26298\" src=\"https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Screenshot-2022-07-05-15.06.32.png\" alt=\"Meme of seagulls looking at you and saying &quot;OMG, she talks&quot;\" width=\"550\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Screenshot-2022-07-05-15.06.32.png 425w, https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Screenshot-2022-07-05-15.06.32-300x272.png 300w, https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Screenshot-2022-07-05-15.06.32-400x363.png 400w, https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Screenshot-2022-07-05-15.06.32-150x136.png 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are some more tips from the event chat:<\/span><\/p><p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI use the &#8216;raise hand&#8217; feature in Google meet. It&#8217;s great for introverts!\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p><p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI work on radio but I&#8217;m an introvert. I learned to imagine always talking to just one person, no matter how many people are listening.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><i>\u201c<\/i><\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Centering in on one person when I talk works for me, so I feel less anxious.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p><p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI usually listen to a calming podcast or music right before a meeting (where I have to present) so that I can cut out distractions.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p><p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cStart with a presentation about a topic you really love. It will be exciting to share the info with other people because you\u2019re already excited about the topic.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p><h2><strong>Three introverted superpowers<\/strong><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plenty of challenges for introverts, then. But let\u2019s not forget that both introverts and extroverts by default are equipped with a set of UX writing superpowers.<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Introverts tend to talk less than they listen, and listening is an excellent starting point for developing <\/span><b>empathy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. And of course empathy is a fantastic skill to have in UX, because it allows us to put ourselves in our users\u2019 shoes.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are also often good at <\/span><b>deep work<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which most definitely comes in handy when it comes to UX research\u2014whether you\u2019re conducting the research yourself or go through research created by others.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, if introverts manage to translate the way we talk to the way we write, we have another superpower right there: the ability to <\/span><b>write concisely <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and explain ourselves with as few words as possible. As UX Writing Hub\u2019s instructor and mentor Damian Corrigan says: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWrite like an introverted human (few words, but complete sentences).\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last but not least, remember that a well-known introvert is Barack Obama. If an introvert could run the US successfully, I think it\u2019s safe to say that we can deal with the challenges of a UX writing job.
