{"id":1705,"date":"2019-12-02T13:23:37","date_gmt":"2019-12-02T13:23:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/?p=1705"},"modified":"2021-05-09T12:15:48","modified_gmt":"2021-05-09T12:15:48","slug":"the-technical-side-of-ux-writing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/the-technical-side-of-ux-writing\/","title":{"rendered":"The technical side of UX Writing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>A guest post by Gil Bouhnick (<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mobilespoon.net\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>The Mobile Spoon<\/b><\/a><b>).<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the past few years, we\u2019ve seen products removing traditional visual elements (such as brand colors, logos, icons, and images) to free up space (and users\u2019 attention) for content.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In such design reality, text is a major design player, and that means words should not only be clear, concise, and useful, but they also need to be <\/span><b>visually aesthetic<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and blend nicely with the product look and feel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><b>Text is no longer part of the design, it is the design.<\/b><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And if that\u2019s the case, UX Writers should be more than great writers and need to design their words like artists.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s a list of tips for writing well-designed microcopy that goes beyond the voice and tone, and focuses on the design side.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Eliminate words for the sake of design<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every UX Writing guide starts with the importance of being concise, but keeping things short is not only important for users to actually read the text and understand it &#8211; it\u2019s also important to keep the design clean and reduce clutter.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Fewer words = less clutter<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This rule becomes even more relevant in mobile designs due to the limited screen real-estate: once a text block bypasses a certain number of words, users are more likely to ignore it:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1709\" src=\"https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/image3-1-1024x622.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"547\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/image3-1-1024x622.png 1024w, https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/image3-1-300x182.png 300w, https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/image3-1-768x467.png 768w, https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/image3-1.png 1330w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Focus on the user<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As product creators, we often want to tell our users more about what\u2019s going on inside our beloved product, but with so much context switching and such a short attention span &#8211; users don\u2019t have a capacity for long stories.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Focus on what\u2019s matter the most for the users: the bottom line, the action, or the outcome.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoid using long technical descriptions, and instead &#8211; provide short and accurate status:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1715\" src=\"https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/image9-1024x621.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"546\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/image9-1024x621.png 1024w, https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/image9-300x182.png 300w, https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/image9-768x465.png 768w, https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/image9.png 1330w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Use friendly text formatting<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When dealing with numbers, dates, duration fields, phone numbers, and unusual data types, it\u2019s important to use friendly formats.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whenever numbers are involved &#8211; use numerals.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When including dates in your text &#8211; add \u201ctoday\u201d, \u201ctomorrow\u201d, and \u201cyesterday\u201d whenever relevant.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phone numbers are harder to read when presented as one block of digits, use punctuation marks to make the number easier to scan.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1710\" src=\"https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/image4-1-1024x622.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"547\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/image4-1-1024x622.png 1024w, https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/image4-1-300x182.png 300w, https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/image4-1-768x466.png 768w, https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/image4-1.png 1426w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Align your microcopy to the design<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are times when design considerations win over copy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1707\" src=\"https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/image1-1-1024x622.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"547\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/image1-1-1024x622.png 1024w, https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/image1-1-300x182.png 300w, https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/image1-1-768x467.png 768w, https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/image1-1.png 1418w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sure, \u201cadd to favorites\u201d might explain the action better, but having 2 lines of text below the button is just unacceptable in this case.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not only it looks misaligned, but it is also likely to complicate any content that will be placed below these buttons.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When such things happen, the design should win and the microcopy should be changed according to the design constraints.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6. Be thoughtful of text alignment\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Different use cases require different text alignment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Center alignment works well for short sections or as a virtual separator. Left alignment is easier to read, therefore better for longer sentences.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When text is placed inside <\/span><b>tables<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; different rules may apply; numbers should be aligned to the right and dates should be aligned to the center while maintaining a fixed number of digits (or characters) to provide a consistent experience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, 1\/1\/75 should be formatted as 01\/01\/75 to ensure all dates get the same visual weight and are easily scannable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1717\" src=\"https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/image11-1024x621.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"546\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/image11-1024x621.png 1024w, https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/image11-300x182.png 300w, https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/image11-768x466.png 768w, https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/image11.png 1428w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7. Remember that most people don\u2019t read<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Users skim through the questions and jump straight to the answers, so make sure the button\u2019s text is clear and includes the action itself, regardless of how clear was the question.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1708\" src=\"https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/image2-2-1024x621.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"546\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/image2-2-1024x621.png 1024w, https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/image2-2-300x182.png 300w, https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/image2-2-768x466.png 768w, https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/image2-2.png 1428w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8. Decorate your CTA buttons with \u201cclick triggers\u201d<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To gain their trust, you\u2019ll need to take a closer look at each step of your funnel, explore any concerns that this step might cause and try to eliminate those concerns using UI design and UX Writing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes, a small text decorator in the right place is all the user needs in order to gain trust, clear anxiety, or address a concern.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I call those elements \u201ctext decorators\u201d (some call them \u201cclick triggers\u201d), and when used wisely, they can encourage your users to act and boost your product\u2019s conversion rates.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To master this technique you need to put yourself in the user\u2019s shoes: what are the things that might cause friction? What concerns they may feel that might prevent them from performing the action you want them to perform, and how can you, as the UX Writer eliminate those concerns and make them feel comfortable to proceed?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1716\" src=\"https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/image10-1024x621.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"546\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/image10-1024x621.png 1024w, https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/image10-300x182.png 300w, https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/image10-768x465.png 768w, https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/image10.png 1330w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">9. Eliminate ambiguity\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When we started Missbeez (a marketplace for lifestyle services on-demand), we witnessed a major drop in one of the steps in our funnel. Talking to our users we\u2019ve learned that our \u201c<\/span><b>Book Now<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d button didn\u2019t provide enough <\/span><b>clarity<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as to what\u2019s going to happen next. This situation is known as the \u201cambiguity effect\u201d in which users are avoiding the unknown and refrain from selection options that are missing information or clarity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, even the smallest concern or UI hiccup <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mobilespoon.net\/2019\/09\/10-lessons-learned-payment-through-our.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">becomes a deal breaker when money is involved<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In our case, many users believed that clicking the \u201c<\/span><b>Book Now<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d button will perform the <\/span><b>payment<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> before the appointment actually took place.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A simple UI text decorator was enough to eliminate this concern and improved our conversion rate dramatically:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1716\" src=\"https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/image10-1024x621.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"546\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/image10-1024x621.png 1024w, https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/image10-300x182.png 300w, https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/image10-768x465.png 768w, https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/image10.png 1330w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">10. Reduce friction\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Text decorators are not just for buttons, here\u2019s an example demonstrating how simple text labels can reduce friction and make the users feel safe and secure about providing their personal details:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1718\" src=\"https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/image12-1024x622.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"547\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/image12-1024x622.png 1024w, https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/image12-300x182.png 300w, https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/image12-768x467.png 768w, https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/image12.png 1330w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">11. Use text to nudge users to act<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I recently collected <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mobilespoon.net\/2019\/04\/collection-cognitive-biases-how-to-use.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>84 cognitive biases you need to master in order to create better-converting products<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It includes plenty of text decorator examples, one of them uses the <\/span><b>hyperbolic discounting<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: a known tendency for people to prefer a smaller-sooner reward over a larger-later reward.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s how a small text decorator can nudge users to act and get a small (yet immediate) payoff:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1712\" src=\"https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/image6-1024x622.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"547\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/image6-1024x622.png 1024w, https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/image6-300x182.png 300w, https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/image6-768x467.png 768w, https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/image6.png 1330w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">12. Urgency and scarcity\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can\u2019t write a post like this one without mentioning urgency and scarcity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The best way to see these 2 in action is to visit booking .com, the only product where half of the supply is already taken and the other half is just about to be taken by raging zombies in a matter of seconds\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To be clear &#8211; I don\u2019t recommend using urgency and scarcity in such a vulgarian way (although you can\u2019t argue with success), but sometimes, adding a small sense of pressure can improve conversion rates:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1713\" src=\"https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/image7-1024x621.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"546\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/image7-1024x621.png 1024w, https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/image7-300x182.png 300w, https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/image7-768x466.png 768w, https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/image7.png 1328w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">13.
