{"id":1340,"date":"2019-09-07T11:21:39","date_gmt":"2019-09-07T11:21:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/?p=1340"},"modified":"2021-07-05T07:20:38","modified_gmt":"2021-07-05T07:20:38","slug":"ux-writing-checklist","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/ux-writing-checklist\/","title":{"rendered":"Reactive Checklists: a Powerful UX Writing Tool to Avoid Annoying Mistakes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can you remember that confusing time when you\u2019ve just delivered a complicated task but then spotted a silly mistake in the easiest part of it? I do, I have plenty of these. And \u201cit is human to err\u201d \u2014 but what we can do is to reduce these instances to the minimum.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once I\u2019ve developed a tool that helped me to tackle such stuff in a great way.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Here it is. I dubbed it an \u201cinstant reactive checklist.\u201d It helps to beat those tiny irritating mistakes and free up the brain RAM for better performance.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why \u201cinstant?\u201d The beauty of this technique lies in the absence of need for early preparation or browsing the internet in search of something to fit your project (what never fits).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why \u201creactive?\u201d This is you and your current project what are the only essential substance to create it. This is especially valuable in a fast-paced digital environment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Recipe<\/span><\/h2>\r\n<p><b>At the very beginning of a project or task, before getting immersed into the very making of it, sit back and make a list of three to five possible pitfalls in it.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(And, surely, don\u2019t forget to use it for revision on delivering.)<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The key idea here is the possible pitfalls in this particular project, thought over in advance; not \u201cemailing\u201d at large but \u201cthis follow-up.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s have an example of the latter.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Say, you need to send a follow-up email with some docs after a meeting with colleagues. What can go wrong there?<\/span><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Misspelled name(s);<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not everybody having access to the doc you\u2019ve provided;<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A missing recipient.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Congrats! Now you have a tool to make your deliverables impeccable at hand and this also can help you focus on the contents. And, surely, now it could be staked for future alike tasks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OK, but what soft is the best here?..<\/span><\/h2>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Any. Can we change the 2nd slide now? Not editable? Damn.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another checklist, this time Moleskine-powered:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><img class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1343 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/image3-1024x607.png\" alt=\"ux writing checklist example\" width=\"900\" height=\"533\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/image3-1024x607.png 1024w, https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/image3-300x178.png 300w, https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/image3-768x455.png 768w, https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/image3.png 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/p>\r\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t elaborate the wording \u2014 just make it understandable for yourself\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Note the last point: it\u2019s the closing parenthesis, \u201c)\u201d. In that very task \u2014 a transactional letter with a string of code, \u2014 I used to misuse parenthesis once due to the extensiveness of the text-in-question (that\u2019s why it\u2019s on the list, actually) and there was no need for me to elaborate the wording here.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why it Works<\/span><\/h2>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Professionalism isn\u2019t about being impeccable anytime-anywhere but being able to deliver the best performance you can.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This tool does two things:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<ol>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Releases tension (your brain now has a backup), thus letting you invest more time and attention in more complicated aspects of your task.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saves time: since you do this when you\u2019re already tuned to a particular task, you naturally need less time to think of all possible peculiarities of it.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What it gave me<\/span><\/h2>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This technique literally became my go-to. I used to suffer from being inattentive to details. I didn\u2019t mean to \u2014 but typos or missed finer details used to mix up with my elaborated deliverables from time to time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was irritating. Indeed, you can deliver the most sophisticated and elaborated piece, but if affected with minor faults, it can turn out to be too expensive for your team.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One day I tried to write out possible pitfalls in a task \u2014 and it worked. Since then, I have two silver bullets for small mistakes: checklists and effective sleep. While the latter is pretty self-explanatory, these \u201creactive checklists\u201d are something more powerful than it may seem at first glance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pro tip: The Morning After<\/span><\/h2>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The technique can be expanded to extensive repeated projects.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But here you\u2019ll seek elaboration.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, on finishing a large project (say, a product update launch), right before letting your hair down, make a list with every teeny-tiny step you\u2019d taken. Every single step from writing the title and description to booking a meeting with your client \/ boss to approve the final result in advance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is an abstract from the reminder on getting prepared for some big activity (sorry for blur: I cannot reveal the details, but I didn\u2019t want to mock a document):<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><img class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1344 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/image4-756x1024.png\" alt=\"microcopy checklist example\" width=\"756\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/image4-756x1024.png 756w, https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/image4-222x300.png 222w, https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/image4-768x1040.png 768w, https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/image4.png 777w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 756px) 100vw, 756px\" \/><\/p>\r\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Put every smallest detail<\/span><\/i><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your goal here is to cover literally everything you do. For instance, I write \u201cClear cache from \u201cInspect,\u201d (not just \u201ccache\u201d.) This level of detailing also proves helpful when you transfer your deliverables or introduce a new colleague to the process.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Importantly, do this until your experience is fresh \u2014 the next day, the magic will evaporate.
