As UX writers and content designers, our job is to present information in an organized, context-appropriate way. Airtable is a great way to visualize patterns in your findings and collaborate with a distributed UX team.<\/p>\n<h2><b>What is Airtable?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/airtable.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Airtable<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is an online tool that can replace any spreadsheet or list on your computer (while looking sleek and colorful the whole time). Here&#8217;s what makes it unique:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s cloud based, making it excellent for collaboration between stakeholders<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s a database-spreadsheet hybrid, visualizing relationships between information\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s a low-code platform designed for simplicity and ease-of-use (no more remembering Excel functions!)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I love its user-friendly, intuitive design. The learning curve is minimal and once you start working in it, you&#8217;ll be thrilled by the endless potential to optimize your workflow.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So how can you use it? Businesses use it for project management, customer-relationship management (CRM), project planning, content calendars, tracking inventory, timesheets, org charts, and daily check-ins for remote teams. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.airtable.com\/templates?utm_source=google&amp;utm_medium=cpc&amp;utm_extra5=kwd-363846812385&amp;utm_extra2=936407691&amp;utm_extra10=110555500961&amp;creative=465926015420&amp;device=c&amp;cx=us&amp;targetid=kwd-363846812385&amp;campaignid=936407691&amp;adgroupid=110555500961&amp;utm_campaign=brand_creator&amp;utm_content=bofu_templates&amp;gclid=CjwKCAjwp_GJBhBmEiwALWBQk8MJ_156haClfoYlfxIJMCzea_sDfYs2xbfk6G8X5c72P8d7TNdyfRoCNDAQAvD_BwE\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Check out their templates for more inspiration.\u00a0<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For everyday life, there are templates for wedding planning, restaurant field guides, apartment\/job hunting, shopping lists, gift idea trackers, study guides, recipe organization, mailing lists, and more.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the design world, use cases include product roadmaps, Agile workflows, card sorting, content audits, an Eisenhower matrix, or entire design systems. In this article, I\u2019ll share how we used Airtable to organize UX research data.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Terminology<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before we continue, here\u2019s a quick guide to common terminology you\u2019ll find in Airtable:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Spreadsheet = Base<\/strong><br \/>\nEach spreadsheet is organized into its own spreadsheet file. In Airtable, each spreadsheet will become its own base.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tabs = Tables<\/strong><br \/>\nSpreadsheets contain tabs for different data sets. In Airtable, each type of data is organized into its own table.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Row = Records<\/strong><br \/>\nSpreadsheets contain rows of information. In Airtable, those are called records.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Columns = Fields<\/strong><br \/>\nSpreadsheets contain columns of data. In Airtable, those are called fields, and there are dozens of field types to add formatting to your data.<\/p>\n<h2><b>Project overview<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the final phase in the <a href=\"https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/join-the-ux-writing-academy\/\">UX Writing Academy<\/a>\u2019s certification course, I joined a small team of fellow students to rewrite screens for primary user journeys in the HiGrade mobile app. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HiGrade offers users instant cannabis testing via machine-vision technologies. People use it when they want to know the quality or potency of bud, or to consult with HiGrade&#8217;s expert agronomists about their grow operation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our goal was to identify where copy was technical or unclear, uncover user pain points that could be addressed through design thinking, and ultimately convert free users to paying subscribers. Here\u2019s the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/alyssawenger.notion.site\/HiGrade-UI-Refresh-a981319c72b54ea08a95ed9a457af3a4\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">case study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> I wrote on our work and results.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In order to understand the specific needs of HiGrade\u2019s customers, we conducted three forms of user research: interviews, competitor analysis, and voice-of-customer feedback. Since there were multiple contributors, we needed a central location to collect our findings. Enter: Airtable.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Competitor analysis<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To better understand where the HiGrade product sits in the market, we ran a competitor analysis of apps targeted to plant growers or cannabis users. Several goals guided this stage of research:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Understanding user needs that are being addressed (or ignored) in the industry<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Determining how competitors approach design challenges\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Identifying ways to distinguish HiGrade\u2019s value proposition from its competition\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the Airtable base, we created two tables for the analysis: one to list all major competitors and one to collect screenshots of flows that could be relevant to our redesign. If you use a similar format, here are fields to add to each table:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Company table\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Name of company (e.g. Blossom)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Type of product (e.g. plant growing guide)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Value proposition (e.g. &#8220;Blossom \u2013 the app that guides you through plant parenthood, supports, and inspires you to plant, grow and care with confidence.&#8221;)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Relevancy (1 star = indirect competitors, 5 stars = direct competitors)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">App store rating (e.g. 4.7 stars, 1000 ratings)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cost (e.g. $19.99\/year)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Design patterns (connected to the \u201cDesign patterns\u201d table we\u2019re going to build)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Link to website<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Notes<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Design patterns\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Feature name (e.g. onboarding)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Name of company (connected to the \u201cCompany\u201d table)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Screenshots<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Notes\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-11543\" src=\"https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/image1-1024x408.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"319\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/image1-1024x408.png 1024w, https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/image1-300x120.png 300w, https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/image1-768x306.png 768w, https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/image1-400x160.png 400w, https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/image1-150x60.png 150w, https:\/\/uxwritinghub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/image1.png 1063w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Linking records helped us visualize which design patterns go with each product.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<h2><b>Voice of Customer data<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To ensure that our designs are user-centric, we needed to gather information on customers like:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is the culture like? How do they talk about cannabis?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What\u2019s their attitude towards growing (or using) cannabis?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What motivates them to grow\/use?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What do they care most about as growers\/users?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What app features would inspire appreciation &amp; loyalty?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The best place to get this information is directly from customers. However, we didn\u2019t have access to real users for interviews, so we arranged another option: voice of customer data.
